Copyright laws provide the author or creator of intellectual works legal protection against someone reproducing, performing, or displaying said work without permission. Plagiarism is when a person uses someone else's work and claims it as their own. Anytime someone uses a work that is not theirs, credit must be given in the form a of a citation. Fair use laws give students and teachers protection when using copyrighted works in a non profit education situation. Thanks to fair use, people in an educational setting do not need to gain permission prior to use.
